Caring for Your Cast: Do’s & Don’ts
So, you’ve broken your bone and now you have a cast. Adjusting to your new life be difficult, and you don’t want to make matters worse with setbacks or complications caused by improper cast care. Here are a few things you should and should not do to make your time in a cast as short and pleasant as possible.
Do’s
-
Do keep your cast dry at all times. This is the number one rule of cast care. Invest in a high-quality cast cover or use multiple layers of plastic to protect your cast when you bathe. Even when covered, do not submerge your cast or hold it under running water.
-
Do your best to avoid dirt, sand, and other powder-like substances. This includes anti-itch powders. Getting these under your cast can cause extreme discomfort and irritation.
-
Do inspect your cast regularly. Keep an eye on your cast for any holes, cracks, or signs of deterioration. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice anything wrong.
Don’ts
- Don’t stick items in your cast in an attempt to scratch an itch. This includes coat hangers, pencils, or anything of the sort. If you are suffering from excessive itchiness, aim a hair dryer or fan under the cast until the urge subsides.
-
Don’t attempt to “trim”, take off, or alter your cast in any way. Do not try to remove any padding inside of the cast. If there are rough edges on the outer layer, ask your doctor what to do before taking any action.
-
Don’t ignore these warning signs. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following:
-
Increased pain or swelling
-
Numbness or tingling in the area below the cast
-
Burning or stinging
-
Loss of movement or color in toes or fingers
