How to Stay Safe When Working Out in the Summer

Posted on June 27th, 2017 by Orthopaedic Specialty Group

With summer officially underway, everyone is eager to stretch their legs and work off those last few pounds. When done correctly, exercising is great for your mind, body, and soul. But, with the temperatures rising, there are a few things you need to keep in mind if you want to stay safe while working out outside this summer.

Drink More Water

We all know how important it is to drink water when exercising, but it’s especially crucial in the summer. Since you’ll be sweating more than you’re used to, pack more than your usual one bottle.

Workout With a Partner

Not only will a partner encourage you to go those last few miles, but they can also help out in case of an injury.

Change Up Your Routine

Not everything you did in the winter can be transferred to the summer. If you’re working on improving your cardio, take up activities that are less strenuous on your body — like cycling and swimming.

Know Your Environment

Summer isn’t the time to try out new trails and foreign terrain. If you’re worried about heat exhaustion or getting lost, stay in an area you’re comfortable and familiar with. A local track is a great place to practice running in the warmer weather because it allows you to stop and take frequent breaks.

Wear Sunscreen

It’s not just your joints and heart you need to be worried about while working out in the summer. You should also be careful to protect your skin by wearing proper clothing, sunscreen, and a hat.

Workout In the Morning and Late Afternoon

Avoid working out outside between 1 and 3 p.m., when the sun is at its strongest. Instead, opt for a morning or late afternoon jog.
