Mobility Issues: The Two Questions You Need to Ask Yourself

Posted on April 10th, 2018 by OSG

As we hit middle age and our pace starts to slow down, people often reminisce about their youth,
when getting around the town wasn’t so difficult. Remember when we could run for miles, regardless
of the weather conditions? Gardening down on our hands and knees was something we could do
from dusk until dawn!

While you might be “comfortable enough” with your mobility today, there are certain signs doctors
believe are accurate indications of complications to come. Properly addressing these issues and
creating a plan of attack to address those areas in the present could help you stay mobile and
independent in the future.

Do You Have Trouble Walking Long Distances?

The first warning sign that your mobility needs work as you age is if you have difficulty walking
between a fourth to a half of a mile (or one to two laps around a track). Scientists now believe that
patients that are unable to perform a brisk walk of a quarter of a mile will surely suffer from mobility
limitation in their senior years.

The way that this can be addressed is through proper supplementation of D vitamins, healthy food
consumption rich in antioxidants and nutrients, and a regular exercise routine. Even moderate
walking and training routines will strengthen leg muscles and help you stay mobile for far longer.

Are Stairs Becoming Increasingly Difficult?

According to the United States Census Bureau, upwards of 40% of the senior population (65 and
above) suffer from various ailments that prevent them from performing basic tasks. Furthermore,
out of that group of patients, nearly 16 million of them report having a difficult time moving up and
down the stairs. As a simple test that can be performed in your home, note how your limbs feel as
you walk slowly up a flight of stairs. Do you notice any aches or pains as your legs shift and bend
throughout the movement?

If so, it’s time to tackle the issue before it becomes a chronic problem. Start by emphasizing proper
stepping technique as you begin the ascension of your stairs and as you begin to move downward.
