What’s Causing My Tight Muscles?

Posted on July 15th, 2018 by OSG

Most people have felt that tight, stiff muscle feeling that can happen with or without movement. Sometimes it comes after a new workout routine and can often be paired along with pain, cramping, and discomfort. Though it usually will go away on its own, there are instances where it could be a sign of something worse — and that’s when you’ll want to see a doctor.

So how do you know the cause of your tight muscles?

New Workout Routine

The most common sign of stiff muscles is from a new or strenuous workout. When you begin a new exercise that your muscles are not accustomed to, they have to work harder than usual. Whether it’s squats, push-ups, jogging or a new weight lifting routine, an extra push could cause damage to the muscle fibers and leave you with a few days of stiff and sore muscles.

Possible Injury

Beyond a workout, a sprain or strain of a muscle or ligament is one of the most common causes of muscle stiffness. If a sprain or strain is possible, you’ll also notice pain, redness, swelling, bruising or limited movement.

Bites or Stings

Not often someone’s first guess,  muscles stiffness can also be a sign of an insect bite or possible sting. Usually, this will often be paired with an itchy, red or possible swollen lump on the skin. Along with this can come pain but it can often subside in a few days unless an allergic reaction occurs. If you notice the spot is not improving or a fever is present — you’ll want to visit your primary doctor.

Ways to Prevent it

If you notice muscle tightness is becoming more and more frequent, there are some minor changes you can try. Good posture, regular breaks, a healthy diet, proper muscle stretching, and more can all help stop your constant muscle stiffness in its tracks.
