Dr. Anthony Viola is a fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon who specializes in treating a wide
variety of conditions involving the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. His clinical practice focuses on
the full spectrum of spine care, ranging from routine degenerative conditions to high-acuity interventions
including complex revision spine surgeries, adult scoliosis, spine trauma, and spine oncologic disorders.
He is skilled in both traditional open procedures and advanced, minimally invasive and robotic spine
surgery.
Dr. Viola emphasizes treating the patient as a whole person and developing a treatment plan that is
personalized to each individual patient. He treats patients with a variety of non-surgical treatments and
believes that surgery should be the last resort. When surgical intervention is necessary, he utilizes modern
technology – including robotics, augmented reality, and muscle-sparing approaches – to minimize post-
operative pain and facilitate a quicker recovery.
Dr. Viola completed his orthopedic spine surgery fellowship at the University of Connecticut
Musculoskeletal Institute, training with leading experts in minimally invasive spine surgery and advanced
surgical technology. He completed his residency at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine,
where he served as chief resident and received numerous awards including resident of the year. Prior to
residency and fellowship, Dr. Viola attended medical school at the University of New England College of
Osteopathic Medicine, where he was inducted into the honor society, and received his undergraduate
degree from the University of Connecticut.
Active in advancing his field, Dr. Viola serves as a peer reviewer for an orthopedic surgery journal and
has published textbook chapters and peer-reviewed publications on spine surgery and orthopedic surgery.
He has presented at various regional and national conferences and developed training lectures for the
American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) to further medical student education.
In his free time, Dr. Viola enjoys spending time with his family and their dog. He enjoys golfing, surfing,
playing the guitar, and traveling; especially to his home state of Maine in the summertime. He is an avid
UConn Huskies basketball fan.
