Plantar Fasciitis: Symptoms, Causes, And Treatments

Posted on August 31st, 2021 by OSG

Plantar Fasciitis is a common health condition that affects the feet and can make walking, running, and moving around very painful and a daily aggravation. This condition involves inflammation and tears in the thick band of tissue, called the plantar fascia, running from your toes to the back of your heel under your foot.

Plantar Fasciitis Symptoms

The most prominent sign of plantar fasciitis is an intense stabbing pain near the heel of the bottom of your foot. The pain is typically most severe after first awaking and getting on your feet. Other times the pain is most often felt include after long periods of standing, immediately after getting up from sitting, or after exercise, as opposed to during it.

Plantar Fasciitis Causes

The plantar fascia works hard to absorb shock as you walk, but the constant tension and stress can become too much, causing small tears and breaks. Repeated stretching and tearing lead to inflammation and pain of the area. Unfortunately, there is no apparent cause for why the fascia starts to tear. Some individuals are more likely to develop plantar fasciitis if they:

  • Are between 40 and 60 years of age
  • Are female
  • Are obese
  • Are flat-footed or have high arches
  • Have an abnormal walk or foot position
  • Spend extended periods of time each day on their feet
  • Wear worn-out shoes

Plantar Fasciitis Treatments

If you’re struggling with plantar fasciitis, you don’t need to suffer in pain alone. See an orthopedic specialist in CT for help managing and treating this condition. They’ll be able to examine your foot accurately and recommend the best course of action to help. Some treatments may include:

  • Icing the area.
  • Night splints worn while sleeping to stretch your calf and foot muscles.
  • Resting and stopping activities or exercises that repeatedly cause you pain.
  • Supportive shoes or shoe inserts that provide extra cushioning and arch support.
  • Over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatories to help relieve pain.
