Tips For Maintaining a Healthy Heart

Heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death among adults in the United States. We all know that regular exercise and eating healthy foods are a big part of leading a healthy lifestyle, but what else can you do to actively protect your heart? It’s easier than you think!

Practice Good Dental Hygiene

Did you know dental health is a useful indicator of overall health, and that includes for your heart? Those with gum disease are more likely to be at risk for heart disease since bacteria in the mouth can potentially travel through the bloodstream and potentially increase inflammation in the blood vessels around the heart. With regular teeth brushing, flossing, and cleanings at the dentist, gum disease can be avoided. 

Get Plenty of Sleep

Sleep is essential for good heart health, and those who fall short frequently of the recommended eight hours or so a day can be at a higher risk for heart disease. Less sleep can also contribute to higher stress levels, which can, over time, put stress on your heart. Make your sleep a priority to ensure your body has the time it needs to refresh and recharge. 

Eat More Healthy Fats and Less Trans Fats

Fats are a key part of our diet, but there are different types of fats, some being good and others bad. Trans fats, found in processed foods, can clog arteries and raise cholesterol levels. Reducing them in your diet helps improve blood flow. On the contrary, healthy fats found in avocados, eggs, nuts, seeds, fatty fish, and more are a great source of essential omega-3s and other vitamins and nutrients.  

Avoid Cigarette Smoke at All Costs

If you are a cigarette smoker, do your heart and the rest of your body a favor and quit as soon as possible. If you’re not a smoker, do your best to avoid secondhand smoke as it can be harmful to your health and increase your risk of heart health complications, among other illnesses. The reason cigarette smoke is detrimental to your heart is that the chemicals contribute to plaque buildup in the arteries. 

Sit Less

Sitting for extended periods can be harmful to your body in more ways than one, and since many of us work sedentary jobs, it’s crucial to schedule some more standing into your day. Those who constantly sit without standing breaks are more at risk for deep vein thrombosis or blood clots since there is minimal blood flow.
