Back pain is something that almost all of us will experience at one point or another. According to the University of Maryland, up to 80% of the adult population suffers from back pain, and it is the second most common reason for doctors visits. Before you book an appointment with your physician, see if these stretches provide any relief.

Stretches for Lower Back Pain

When most people refer to back pain, they are referring to the lumbar spine (lower back). This is the most common type of back pain due to the rising popularity of desk jobs. A sedentary lifestyle already takes its toll on your back, and many of us are doubling down on the ill effects by constantly sitting with poor posture. Here are a few stretches you can try to alleviate your lower back pain.

  • Back flexion exercise: Lay on your back and pull both knees to your chest while flexing your head forward until a comfortable stretch is felt.

  • Hamstring stretch: While standing up, cross your left leg over your right one. Bend down as far as you can, trying to touch your toes. Don’t bend your knees; you should feel a stretch in the back of your thigh.

  • Laying back stretch: Laying down flat on your back, swing your right leg to the left side of your body, as shown here. Hold this position for 20 seconds, and repeat with your left leg.

  • Hip stretch: Kneel down on your right knee, with your left leg at 90 degrees in front of you. Drive your hips forward, and your right foot into the ground. You should feel a stretch in your right hip flexor. Repeat for the opposite side.

If after several weeks of stretching you feel no relief, it is time to consult a medical professional.
